PROJECT OVERVIEW

 

GMIT is a leading Institute of Technology located across the Galway Mayo region of the West of Ireland. Founded in the 1970's the college now caters for around 9000 students offering five specialised schools of study in the disciplines of Science, Engineering, Hotel and Catering Studies. The main centre for the college is located, in Renmore, on the outskirts of Galway city, and has recently been transformed into a state of the art learning resource centre. The most recent project was completed on the library and information technology block, central to this was the installation of a natural ventilation system.

The library at GMIT is a 2 storey building with 3 atria located centrally, the IT department includes lecture halls over 3 levels with a senior administration tier constructed at roof level. The new facility is a building of around 10,000 sq metres. The exterior of the building was uniquely designed reflecting the shape of three sails which not only reflect a bold, artistic design but are also functional. The three copper clad (sails) shield the south facing library from solar gains; act as acoustic baffles, light reflectors and as air dispensers.
